Everything you need to know about how we work, what we deliver, and how Practical Business Solutions is the right fit for your business.
What does Practical Business Solutions actually do?+−
We help business owners understand their numbers so they can truly understand their business. That means combining Book IQ and OMI (your virtual CFO layer) with modern accounting, proactive tax strategy, and practical consulting, all from one coordinated team focused on financial clarity and better decisions.
What is Book IQ and how is it different from typical reporting?+−
Book IQ is your financial intelligence layer. Instead of just producing static reports, it pulls together your financial data, highlights what matters, and turns it into insight you can actually act on. The goal is not more pages; it is clarity about margin, cash, runway, and direction.
What is OMI and how does it act as a virtual CFO?+−
OMI is the working layer that sits on top of Book IQ, giving you structured reviews, scenario planning, and decision support without needing a full-time CFO on staff. We use OMI to walk through results with you regularly, show what is working and what is not, and help turn insight into specific moves.
How is your accounting service different from a traditional bookkeeping firm?+−
We do not treat accounting as a checkbox. We treat it as the foundation of every serious decision you make. Our accounting practices are designed for the 21st century: reconciled books, accurate and up-to-date records, and reporting built to hold up when you need to raise, borrow, sell, or simply plan the next quarter.
What size or type of business do you work best with?+−
We do not pick clients by size. We pick them by drive. We work with owners who want books they can trust, numbers they can understand, and a partner that helps connect those numbers to decisions, from early-stage ventures to more complex, multi-entity companies.
How do you handle taxes differently from other firms?+−
We see tax as strategy, not just a deadline. Yes, we prepare and file what is due, but we also analyze your position, advise on options, and build a compliant, growth-focused approach around timing, structure, and cash decisions. The aim is fewer surprises and more confidence about what comes next.
Can you work with my existing tools and systems?+−
In most cases, yes. Part of our work is reviewing your current financial stack, including your accounting platform, spreadsheets, and any other tools, and deciding what should stay, what should go, and where small changes can lead to much clearer reporting. We prefer evolution over disruption.
What does your four-step process look like in practice?+−
We follow four steps: Assess, Identify, Organize, Advise. We assess where your business stands today, identify gaps and opportunities in your data and systems, organize reporting through Book IQ and OMI so your numbers become clear, and then advise you using regular reviews and strategic working sessions. Each step is built to move you closer to true financial clarity.
How often will we review our numbers together?+−
We typically meet at least quarterly for structured reviews, and many clients choose more frequent touchpoints during key growth or transition periods. The cadence is designed so you are making decisions on current information, not last quarter’s surprises.
Do you replace my existing accountant or work alongside them?+−
Yes, we replace your current accountant and become your primary financial partner. That means we take over the books, reporting, and tax work, then layer Book IQ and OMI on top so your numbers are clean, current, and actually useful for decisions. Instead of coordinating between multiple firms, you work with one team that owns the full picture and is accountable for the accuracy of your data and the clarity of the insight you get from it.
How do you charge for your services?+−
We charge in a way that’s simple, predictable, and built around an ongoing relationship, not lock‑in.
We use engagement‑based pricing with a flat monthly retainer and no surprise fees. Most clients start on a 12‑month engagement that bundles Book IQ, OMI (your virtual CFO layer), and accounting support into one clear monthly amount. After that initial term, the relationship shifts to month‑to‑month, so you stay because the partnership is working for you, not because you’re stuck in a long contract.
Additional needs are handled on an a la carte basis. Tax services, business consulting, marketing and branding support, e‑commerce guidance, and broader business advisory can be added as required, each scoped and priced in advance. The goal is simple: you always know exactly what you’re paying for, what’s included, and how it connects back to the clarity you get from your numbers.
What kind of decisions can you help me make?+−
We help with strategic decisions that move the business forward. That includes hiring and staffing plans, pricing and margin targets, investment timing, cash flow management, debt and financing choices, and strategic shifts in focus or market. If the decision touches your numbers, we are in the conversation.
How quickly can you start working with a new client?+−
Onboarding usually begins within a few weeks of engagement. We start with a deep review, Practical FRS, of your current financial stack, books, tools, and reporting, then move into cleanup and alignment. Once the foundation is solid, we layer in Book IQ, OMI, and regular accounting services. If other services are added, these are discussed and planned accordingly, directly with you and your schedule.
What if my books are a mess right now?+−
A strong, organized accounting and bookkeeping stack is the structural frame of your business. If that frame is crooked or held together by guesswork, every decision built on it is at risk, no matter how good things look on the surface.
This is exactly where we step in. We specialize in turning tangled, inconsistent books into a clean, reliable foundation you can trust. We untangle history, rebuild structure, and design systems that stay accurate and current. Our core discipline is converting financial chaos into financial clarity, so you can finally rely on your numbers and use them to confidently build what comes next.
How will I know if Practical Business Solutions is a good fit for me?+−
If you are an owner who wants to know, not guess, where your business really stands, and you are ready to use your numbers as a tool instead of a burden, we are a strong fit. Our clients care about margin, cash, burn rate, and direction, and they want a partner who can sit beside them, translate and educate them on the data, and help turn clarity into confident action.
In which countries are Practical Business Solutions services available?+−
Practical Business Solutions is based in Charleston, South Carolina, and we serve businesses that are legally registered in the United States and its territories. Our work, including Book IQ and OMI, is built specifically around U.S. GAAP accounting standards, tax rules & regulations, and banking systems, so everything we deliver is precise, compliant, and relevant to American businesses rather than a generic global template.
What is Practical AI?+−
Practical AI helps business leaders adopt and implement artificial intelligence in purposeful, structured, and strategic ways. Rather than starting with generic tools or isolated experiments, we focus on the real workflows, systems, and operational challenges inside your business. The goal is to identify useful opportunities, build working solutions, and create lasting internal capability.
What is a Forward Deployed Engineer?+−
A Forward Deployed Engineer, or FDE, is a named AI practitioner who works closely with your team to move from ideas to real implementation. Your FDE works within your business environment, onsite and remote, using your systems and data to build and test practical AI workflows with real users. This is not a rotating resource pool or a project that your team has to manage around its normal responsibilities.
How does the Practical AI program work?+−
The program begins with a no-cost Key Stakeholder Briefing to discuss what is changing in your industry, where AI can create value, and which common implementation mistakes to avoid. From there, leadership can participate in an Executive AI Orientation, followed by a four-week FDE First Build that puts a working solution in front of users within the first two weeks. Ongoing Embedded Delivery provides continued builds, training, documentation, and support as your team prioritizes additional workflows. The systems are built in your environment and on your data, so your organization maintains ownership and avoids platform lock-in.
